A Dynamic FPGA Implementation of the Serpent Block Cipher

چکیده

A JBits implementation of the Serpent block cipher in a Xilinx FPGA is described. JBits provides a Java-based Application Programming Interface (API) for the run-time modification of the configuration bitstream. This allows dynamic circuit specialization based on a specific key and mode (encrypt or decrypt). Subkeys are computed in software and treated as constants in the Serpent datapath. The resulting logic optimization produces a circuit that is half the size and twice the speed of a static, synthesized implementation. With a throughput of over 10 Gigabits per second, the JBits implementation has sufficient bandwidth for SONET OC-192c (optical) networks.

Fast Implementation and Fair Comparison of the Final Candidates for Advanced Encryption Standard Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays

The results of fast implementations of all five AES final candidates using Virtex Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Arrays are presented and analyzed. Performance of several alternative hardware architectures is discussed and compared. One architecture optimum from the point of view of the throughput to area ratio is selected for each of the two major types of block cipher modes. For feedback ciph...

Differential Power Analysis: A Serious Threat to FPGA Security

Differential Power Analysis (DPA) implies measuring the supply current of a cipher-circuit in an attempt to uncover part of a cipher key. Cryptographic security gets compromised if the current waveforms obtained correlate with those from a hypothetical power model of the circuit. As FPGAs are becoming integral parts of embedded systems and increasingly popular for cryptographic applications and...

Nothing better than a Python to write a Serpent

Serpent is a 128-bit block cipher designed by Ross Anderson, Eli Biham and Lars Knudsen as a candidate for the Advanced Encryption Standard, a competition sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to define a successor to DES. Serpent is designed to be faster than DES and more secure than triple-DES. It is in the public domain and there are no restrictions on its use: the ...

FPGA-Based High-Speed Authenticated Encryption System

The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) running in the Galois/Counter Mode of Operation represents a de facto standard in the field of hardware-accelerated, block-cipher-based high-speed authenticated encryption (AE) systems. We propose hardware architectures supporting the Ethernet standard IEEE 802.3ba utilizing different cryptographic primitives suitable for AE applications. Our main design g...

Serpent and Smartcards

We proposed a new block cipher, Serpent, as a candidate for the Advanced Encryption Standard. This algorithm uses a new structure that simultaneously allows a more rapid avalanche, a more efficient bitslice implementation, and an easy analysis that enables us to demonstrate its security against all known types of attack. Although designed primarily for efficient implementation on Intel Pentium/...
